The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is a broad novel, which tells the story of Wang Lung, a poor farmer in rural China, whose life is bound to the land that he tilts. Through the years of the toilet, calm yet strong O-Lan, and marriage from the birth of their children, Wang lungs grow from poverty to wealth, although prosperity brings new conflicts to separate from pride, family discord and soil that maintains it. The novel examines the subjects of tradition, existence, social change and permanent cycle of life bound to the earth. Both intimate and epic, it provides a powerful picture of human flexibility and a deep connection between land and identity.
